Have you been looking at a distributed file system for your organization? Usually this is done so that large file collaboration can be as efficient as possible. There is an interesting issue that seems to occur when people initiate a large file collaboration methodology such as a distributed file system. The network resources start to get hogged by particular high end users and everyone else slows down to a crawl. The first and most obvious solutions is to create rules in terms of what data gets priority. Another solution is to have replication at remote sites. Yet, the most common problems that will occur then is file revision issues.
Our solution, which integrates a distributed file system and Folder Maestro software solves both problems. WAN Optimization is not as necessary because local servers contain shared files. Revision issues won’t happen because of the Folder Maestro software. If you want to chat about how this might work for your organization, please give us a call and we’ll show you how we integrated Folder Maestro and a distributed file system to optimize our WAN!
Configuring a Distributed File System

If you are going to set up a Distributed File System for your company and actually want your clients (internal people) to be able to access this system, you need to pay careful attention to the set up of your distributed file system. Microsoft has some interesting tips and helps in regards to configuring a Distributed File System. If you want to see how someone would use a Distributed File System, see how Kysor used a Distributed File System in conjunction with 3rd party software.
The first step would look like this:
Click Start, go to Programs, then to Administrative Tools, and then click on Distributed File System.
Obviously, you will want to check out their link as most users are using the MS DFS in their companies if they are using DFS at all. So, what do you do when you get stuck with problems on a Distributed File System? The first thing you must consider is if you want to gain the technical expertise necessary to administer this file system. If you want to outsource this part and get some expert help, calling our office and asking for Tom will get you our top exec on distributed file systems.
Distributed File System Common Problems

The most common problem people have when implementing a distributed file system solution will have to do with file mapping. When the same file essentially resides on multiple servers for redundancy, often there can be source file issues which require a lot of tech support to get straightened out. For example, path not found errors are quite common for a distributed file system. To resolve the path not found error, check out this Microsoft site which speaks directly on this common issue!
Another couple of common errors when dealing with AutoCAD have been found recently and can be addressed on this site. What this site will go over is the inability to open a folder in the file navigation dialog. Obviously this is not what you are hoping for as you have a distributed file system on your servers.
A final commpn problem with distributed file systems is network drag. People will often try and use WAN Accelerators or Network performance enhancers, but with larger files this can be time consuming. With our Folder Maestro solution, there is a fast solution for the slow file downloads which are common with most distributed file systems!
